Springers' Rest
Poignantly historic in nature but vibrantly modern in application, Springers' Rest is a truly unique property & business.
Prominently located on the Barton Highway just 29 minutes drive from Canberra 'Springers' is a popular refresh spot for day-tripping winery buffs, touring groups & locals alike.

Except for some brief interludes this has been the case since 1878.
Born as the 'Travellers' Rest Inn', the original rock, pise & early brick section was continually licensed till 1924. During this period one noted guest was Lord Kitchener who visited Australia in 1910 to review our defensive capabilities. Whilst Lord Horatio didn't have a problem handling the Sudanese locals in 1898 he did have a problem coping with our lads of the day. Interestingly he noted in his diary that 'the locals were such villainous characters, I feared for my life, & slept with a pistol under my pillow'. His stay at Murrumbateman was very brief.
In October 1928 (the existing bar room) became the local post office till 1992 when it became a private residence. In 2001 the property was transformed (under the guidance of an eminent period property architect) into the modern hospitality venue it is today.
Needless to say, the original section of the structure is contextually beautiful. The original hand milled shiplap ceilings, cedar doors & trims & hand routed cedar skirting boards are still in place. Great care was taken to ensure all finishes thematically engaged its era. This section houses the reception area plus the bar room & three dining rooms. Two of these rooms can be used for discreet private functions.
The more recent rear section features one of the best commercial grade kitchens in the region, plus support rooms for stock storage, the office & staff bathroom. Also, there's additional dining space along the gallery too.
Warmer month alfresco dining is very popular. Springers' has two fabulous alfresco terraces with an over-arching walnut tree that's germination seed originated from Jeir Station many years back. Also, the covered front verandah is a favourite coffee sipping spot with bicyclers who prop their wheels up against the front wall.
But Springers' Rest isn't purely about what it was or is; its also about the future.
Time has changed Murrumbateman into a thriving community with around 6 large rural recreation estates & a recognised quality table wine producing area.
The demographic profile of the area has abruptly swung towards young families with high incomes & tourists are drawn to the area by the wineries & restaurants. It's a recognised fact that the limited amount of B&B's are in demand as visitors like to say overnight & fully appreciate the local benefits.
With Springers' Rest's buildings being sited at the very front of its 2,384m block there's enormous scope for tourism related development such as accommodation suites or an event venue for weddings & conferences.
Essentially, Springers' Rest is a fascinatingly delicious opportunity for those of you with passion for hospitality & love of village life.
Please contact the agent John Lennie for additional information & inspection appointments.
