'Badenville' has been held in the same family for over 110 years. The commercial orchard on the property was tended until the year 2000, when the owner, who had a great love of the native animals of the area, then let the orchard 'go back to nature'. Gum trees were planted wherever a fruit tree died.
The stone on the buildings at Badenville were quarried on the property. You will see this quarry on the first corner you turn on as you walk towards the scrub.

The scrub is home to many rare and endangered native orchid species, which have been visited and studied by universities, as one of few untouched areas of remanent native vegetation in the area. You will also likely see other wildlife as you wander the scrub, the kangaroos, possums and many species of lizards.
As you walk up the road past the quarry, you will note a well to your left which has been covered with mesh for safety. This is one of two wells on the property, used in the early collection of water.
The second, larger dam that you pass as you walk up the hill was on the site of an old quartz mine. The past owners, fearing that someone may take up the mining lease anew, built a dam in its place to prevent further exploration. Using the property's water licence, water from the Little Para was pumped to this dam, and then used to irrigate the fruit trees.
Further up the hill, you will find the ruins of a three-room house in the scrub. This is where the previous owner grew up as a young child. The older generation occupied the main house down the hill. The clearing in the scrub opposite this house is known as 'the clover paddock'.
This is where the family kept their horses. Every morning, during fruit season, their father would leave during the night, taking a horse and cart full of fruit to the markets on East Terrace in Adelaide.
The top paddock, above the scrub, was used to extend the fruiting season, as it saw sunlight well before the lower paddocks. The stunning views from here need to be seen to be appreciated.
