Channelling the uber-cool aesthetic of warehouse conversions in Melbourne and New York, this Heritage Listed former brewery site has been reinvented in the most luxurious of ways. Large and luxurious, the 3-bedroom apartment boasts spacious rooms, soaring high ceilings, and grand exposed beams overhead. Exquisite morning sun pours in through the windows, washing the interior with soft natural light.
A stunning modern kitchen overlooks the open-plan dining, living and alfresco areas, while an upstairs loft is a beautiful space to retreat for a movie, or simply curl up with a book. The master suite adjoins a beautiful ensuite bathroom, as well as an expansive balcony.
The history of this fabulous building, adapted from www.in herit.stateheritage.wa.gov.au:
The former Joe White Maltings Plant was an important part of Australia's brewing infrastructure for almost a century, and is a unique example of the industrial process required for brewing.
The history of the site begins in 1903, when David William Harwood established the Perth Pneumatic Malting Company to supply malt for his company Harwood Brewery. By 1910, his entire brewing operation moved to Palmerston Street, but by 1928, a new owner of the company made an agreement with the Swan Brewery to cease brewing and instead concentrate on malting. The Union Malting Company was registered the following year.
In 1986, the Victorian company, Joe White Maltings, purchased the property, forming the biggest independent malting company in the southern hemisphere. In the late 1990s malting operations ceased and the company vacated the site, but the building continues to be iconic today, with its striking original facade living on as a reminder of the history of the site.
In the early 2000s, the old brewery was converted into high-end apartments by the Australand Property Group, with the retention of many original character features. In 2002 'The Maltings' won a national award from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) for its first stage. In 2006 it won a national award for the best urban renewal project in the UDIA's Award for Excellence. The chief judge, Peter Lanigan said it was a first-rate example of urban renewal because of its ability to blend heritage and history with modern living .
