Last Listing description (September 2022)

Nareeb, a single level, 1960s Georgian -style home set on a block of 750 sqm (approx.) occupies a premier position in one of Toorak's most iconic leafy streets. It also represents an incredible once-in-a generation opportunity.to build a luxurious new home suited to today's lifestyle (STCA).

In original condition, the three bedroom, two bathroom home, built around a central courtyard includes a spacious entry hall, formal and informal living and kitchen in one wing with a separate bedroom and bathroom wing. Original features range from the marble fireplace to elaborate light fittings, wallpaper, gold plated bathroom taps and mosaic tiled walls in the ensuite. It also retains original outbuildings.

The name Nareeb has been associated with Melbourne society for more than 100 years. Nareeb was an Italianate mansion built in 1888 and designed by architect William Salway who also designed Raheen in Kew. Built for piano manufacturer Charles Beale, it had 34 lavish and expensively decorated rooms and occupied 5.5 acres (22,257 sqm) of prime Toorak land fronting Kooyong Road. It hosted some of Melbourne's most extravagant balls and parties and magazines regularly featured these stunning events in their social pages.

The property was sold in 1906 to Walter and Alice Simmons, whose daughters lived there until 1964 when it was sold and the mansion demolished to make way for Nareeb Court.

More than 1000 people viewed the house, its antique collections and grounds the day before the auction in 1965. Parts of the original fence and heavy iron gates frame the gateway on Kooyong Road.

With its unrivalled location, proximity to some of Melbourne's finest schools, shopping, dining and lifestyle precincts, this home steeped in history, is ready for a new beginning.
