THE HISTORY
History shows 'Chatsworth Park' has always had a Thoroughbred history with James Redfern in 1890, a known horse enthusiast, owning the property with 1891 Melbourne Cup Winner 'Malvalio' buried at 'Chatsworth Park'. The 1893 Melbourne Cup Winner 'Tarcoola' was also bred on this historic property.
'Chatsworth Park' was then owned by L.K.S. Mackinnon, a known racing owner and administrator who had the time honored LKS Mackinnon Stakes being named after him, a race which today is still one of Australasia's famous Group One events.
In 1933, well known Grazier and Wool Industry leader, Douglas Boyd purchased 'Chatsworth Park' and built the homestead in 1936 with the assistance of the eminent Melbourne Architect Robert Hamilton, who between 1920 and 1940 was recognized as Melbourne's leading architect. Mr Hamilton excelled at designing a large number of houses, flats and shop buildings particularly in Toorak, Armadale & Prahran. These buildings adopted the Tudor revival style which was utilized for a number of shop buildings in Toorak Road, Toorak which led that area becoming known as the 'Toorak Village'.
After a short change of ownership, 'Chatsworth Park' in 1948 was sold to the well known identity Ian Bayles DFC, a successful race owner, VRC Committee member and honored World War II pilot. This majestic holding today remains in the Bayles family with members of the family still actively involved in the Thoroughbred Industry.
