If Gaia, the Greek goddess of earth, designed a home in the 21st Century, this is what she'd create.
A deeply thoughtful and considered ode to nature, this Lifehouse Design home is a masterclass in the architecturally inspired fusion of the natural and man-made worlds. With sustainability at its core and beauty in every detail, it's a home that both honours the land and supports a self-sufficient future.
Set on 12.2 hectares (approx. 30 acres) in the stunning hamlet of Metcalfe, with its rolling hills and natural wilderness, this off-grid-ready sanctuary offers more than just privacy and space, it offers a new way of living. A way to tread lightly while living beautifully.
The home's arrow-like design points due north, capturing all-day light and breathtaking panoramic views. The central living and entertaining zone is anchored by deep window recesses, double glazing throughout, and spotted gum timber joinery, all crafted to maximise passive solar efficiency. Three layers of insulation, metal shutters on the north and east, and clever cross-ventilation mean there's no need for air conditioning, even through the height of summer.
The kitchen is equally considered, featuring a walk in pantry, Bosch appliances, an electric induction cooktop, and spotted gum benchtops. Throughout, floors of Chinese marble enhance both aesthetic and thermal comfort. The home is proudly gas-free and fully electric, reflecting a conscious lifestyle choice that's increasingly supported by environmental policy.
Powered by 10 solar panels and a Goodwe GW3000-DNS inverter (3kW), the home is easily convertible to full off-grid living with the addition of a battery. A roof-mounted fire safety irrigation system and dual shut-off levers for downpipes provide extra security in fire-prone seasons.
But perhaps the most magical aspect lies outside. The gardens have been designed as a living bird and animal hide, teeming with flora selected for biodiversity. From small mallees and wattles that bloom from May to January, to an understorey of eremophilas, mint bushes, wax flowers, hakeas and grevilleas, every plant was chosen to provide food, shelter, and nesting for birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects. Even through the height of last summer, minimal water was needed beyond the immediate house fringe. Four varieties of grass trees, native daisies and fan flowers round out this truly regenerative landscape.
To fully appreciate the beauty of this sanctuary, step out onto one of the decking or patio areas thoughtfully positioned around the home, perfect spots to kick back with a cuppa, watch the birds flit through the garden, or enjoy golden hour with friends and a glass of wine. These alfresco spaces connect seamlessly to the indoors, making the most of the home's serene setting and year-round connection to nature.
