This cottage was built circa 1860 by Augustus Dechamps, who later owned Lillydale Vineyard. He arrived in Australia with his father, Victor Joseph Clement (Joseph), and brother Louis in January 1854 on the ship Keran Hasselaar.
Lillydale Vineyard, the name under which his wine was marketed, was based at his home, Pine Grove (now Pine Street). Augustus land was originally 25 acres, and he later acquired an adjoining 27 acres selected by Bradshaw Campbell sometime between 1860 and 1872. He marketed his wine from Pine Grove, located near Main and Anderson Streets, with the old Warburton railway line to the east.
The area is now known as Deschamps Hill, with Deschamps Avenue forming the entrance. This was the first settlement east of Olinda Creek. The quality of the wines produced saw cafs in Melbourne and Geelong stocking Augustus wines.
His property still exists, with a frontage of 7 Pine Street, Lilydale.
