OVENS BENEVOLENT ASYLUM - 1863 ''Out of the Goldfields'nNot long after gold was found in Beechworth in 1852, the Ovens Benevolent Asylum was built halfway up the hill leading to where Mayday Hills was built in 1867. The Asylum was established to provide accomodation for those requiring permanent care as a result of injuries from gold mining or other long-term incapacitating conditions. Over the years the Ovens Benevolent Asylum provided custodial care to thousands of men and women who were either homeless or who needed support.
Today the Asylum has been left vacant since the new Beechworth Hospital opened around five years ago. The site is located in Warner Road and is on two Crown allotments, 2013 and 2014. Crown allotment 2013 is 3.993 hectares in size and incorporates all of the pre existing buildings of which there are five with Heritage Listings. This allotment is zoned Mixed Use via the Indigo Shire. Crown allotment 2014 is 2.518 hectares, located on the southern side of Gilchrist Avenue, comprising entirely of vacant land with a zoning of Residential 1 via the Indigo Shire.
Opportunities are endless with both properties to be sold under a single Contract of Sale with a possibility of issuing separate Crown Grant titles for each parcel.
