Considered to be one of the oldest dwellings in Hobart, Woodcutters Cottage displays the hand-sawn timber cladding, windows and original timber floors of the early nineteenth century. Permanently listed with the Tasmanian Heritage Council as an Old Colonial Georgian domestic building, the single storey weatherboard house with hipped roof, central door flanking 12-paned double hung windows and verandah, is remarkably original. In the 1990 s a young couple purchased the property in a dilapidated state and undertook a full restoration to preserve the unique early worker s cottage. The front fence was reconstructed using hand split palings, known to have a long life the hand split palings and hand-sawn timber is less likely to rot or warp, the house seems evidence to that! The house was re-roofed in galvanized iron and a sympathetic extension for bathroom, laundry and toilet completed the upgrade. The property has the benefit of double street frontage to Corby Avenue where the garage/outbuilding was added in consultation with a heritage architect, Brendan Lennard. The restoration won the National Trust award in 1994. Home to the current family for eighteen years, the cottage is much loved and appreciated for its authenticity, warmth and charm. Few changes have been made to the original lath and plaster front rooms and the timber lined kitchen living area. The garden is attractively paved, terraced and landscaped. The property is conveniently located five minutes from the Goulburn Street Primary School and within easy walking distance of Hobart City.
