AREA OVERVIEW
Located approximately 38 kilometres from Hobart City are the seaside villages of South Arm and Opossum Bay. The peninsula is accessed over an isthmus that separates Ralph s Bay from the ocean with Mount Wellington, and its ever changing colours and moods, looming beyond the Arm End Headland.
South Arm and Opossum Bay are an eclectic mix of holiday shacks, executive homes and rural properties. Once famous for its very productive orchard farms, the peninsula is now a Mecca for anyone wanting a quieter lifestyle, in a beautiful environment, within easy distance of the city and services.
Both communities are close knit and offer much to the residents. South Arm has a delightful primary school (with an average of 110 students), a child care centre, and a community hall where many activities are coordinated (including karate, indoor bowls and line dancing).
For those who like to socialise, there are regular card or craft evenings, gardening, walking, and fishing groups. Every year, for almost thirty years, a theatrical production has been put on at the community hall to raise money for the school. Anyone is welcome to join in, add their talents and have fun for a good cause.
The South Arm RSL and Community Club has great meals, Sunday luncheons, a bottle shop and wonderful social gatherings. Behind the Club is a nine hole golf course with a very challenging water hazard but a very welcoming nineteenth hole. The general stores in both towns carry a huge range of goods. We also have a very comprehensively stocked Pharmacy.
Of course the area is best known for its spectacular beaches, with safe swimming and boating areas and fantastic fishing grounds.
