50 Cemetery Rd, Lunawanna is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom House with 10 parking spaces and was built in 1890. The property has a land size of 45800m2 and floor size of 71m2. While the property is not currently for sale or for rent, it was last sold in November 2017.
This long-established South Bruny Island property dates back to 1890, when Mr J.W. Clinch of Hobart planted an orchard on the land that slopes up from the shores of Daniels Bay. He named it 'Warrawae' and built a house looking over the water. A 1915 newspaper article in The Mercury described 'Warrawae' as 'a very pretty place, with a nice house, flower garden and 18 acres of orchard.' The article also noted that 'flowers seem to grow superbly on this bay, and Mrs Clinch, who frequently goes down from town, has a grand display, her show of crocuses being exceptionally fine.nTime has had its effect on the property, which is now named 'Heron Waters'. The old homestead still stands and even in its present rather dilapidated state, it's easy to see what a charming house it was - and could be again. Until very recently, it has been enjoyed as a rustic family shack. It would be wonderful if a new owner could see the potential of restoring this special piece of Bruny Island history.
Time has changed the land, too. There are some gnarled old apple and pear trees, still bearing fruit where Mr Clinch's orchard flourished. But in the 1930s, the property was used to grow pine seedlings for the plantations that were established on South Bruny in that period, and mature radiata pines have grown on large parts of the land. There are also some ancient macrocarpas marking the original boundary of the home block. Some of the timber would be of millable quality and this could partly offset the cost of clearing the trees.
What has not changed is the prime coastal location of the land. Mr Clinch had a good eye when he chose this sheltered corner of Daniels Bay to build his home. The homestead looks to the west, with views of the water and Adamsons Peak on the far side of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.. From the driveway, it's just a few steps across Cemetery Road to the shore.
