Macquarie House is an important part of Tasmania's stagecoach history. In 1830, James Crear built a stone house with convict labour on land he received as a land grant in 1824. Originally a private residence, it was soon used as an Inn to cater to the booming coach transport industry operating between Hobart and Launceston.
