The Old Post Office on Carlton River, is one of the oldest and longest serving post office buildings still standing, providing a postal service to the community from 1841 to 1949. It is a rare example of a humble cottage building style, constructed from lathe and plaster, with stone chimneys and weatherboard extensions. It was also the departure point for a ferry that ran across the Carlton River in the 1800s. Lady Jane Franklin, the wife of the Governor Sir John Franklin, was said to have visited the cottage on her way to Port Arthur.
