In the early years of the 1850s and 1860s, Yankalilla was one of the biggest and most important towns in the state apart from the mining centres in the north.

The school was operated by several people, most famous being Sister Mary MacKillop. Sister Mary, canonised in 2010 as Australias first Catholic saint lead the Sisters of St. Joseph at this quaint and iconic landmark in 1867. Also known as The Brown Joeys, this order of nuns was devoted to teaching the children of the poor.
