History of the House;
The house was built in 1907 by Daniel J Hewett
The house was named Dalkeith.
The house was the home of John McKellar Stewart (1878-1953). He was the Vice Chancellor and Professor of Philosophy at Adelaide University, commencing this position in 1923, after studying at the University of Melbourne and the University of Edinburgh.
John McKellar Stewart married Margaret Grace Bothroyd in Melbourne, who later wrote for the Argus and was active in the league of Women Voters.
They had 4 children, one of whom was Neil McKellar Stewart, a local man who died only 2 years ago. John McKellar Stewart has a granddaughter Jane who is also a local. She lived in this house from the time she was 4 years old.
When John took the Adelaide University job he travelled by train from Melbourne. He had heard that Coromandel Valley was a beautiful area in which to live. He found Dalkeith in Blackwood and settled here in 1920.
It has original Baltic pine and hardwood floor boards.
