The land is located at the corner of Napper Road and Uplands Drive, Parkwood. At the northern end of the Gold Coast, east of the M1 motorway. Concept

The site is accessed from Uplands Drive with car parking to the foreground and a distinctive pedestrian access with a covered drop-off and pick-up zone. The building nestles into the incline of the ground reducing the perceived building mass and height, with a streetscape comparable to a residential environment and scale. With a single access point the resident areas are safely annexed by the reception, managerial and therapy suites. The threshold to the entry is also adorned and enhanced by the fragrances and activity of the beauty salon and cafe with an inviting outdoor seating terrace.

Beyond the supporting facilities are the resident private areas which are connected to the central building by enclosed passageways, generous in width and are drenched in light and vistas to the landscaped open spaces and courtyards. The resident areas branch into three wings, along an east / west axis, that encompass the primary courtyards and shelter them from potential traffic noise and the harsh summer westerly sun. Each of the building wings, at each of the levels, are accompanied by communal dining and lounge areas, also with vistas to the surrounds and courtyards. Each level, to each of the wings, is affiliated to a lift and stairs that are not too high or steep, so that they may be traversed with a lessor amount of effort.

Courtyards

The heart and focus of the scheme is resident well-being and connectivity with the courtyards and open spaces which are formed and bounded by the resident private spaces. Connection at ground level is both physically direct and visual with upper levels retaining a visual surveillance of people passing through and the rustling of leaves from the treetops. The courtyards evoke a meditative calmness through the raw natural materials, warming colours, water features and the oasis of planting colours, textures and fragrances. They are places that bring people together, either professionally or socially, or are places for soulful rejuvenation. Either way they bring residents and affiliates in contact with the fresh air and sunlight, stimulating the senses.
