The Johnstone River flows into Gladys Inlet, with a 300m-wide entrance and tidal shoals extending up to 1 km seaward. Swimming is best at mid to high tide due to extensive tidal flats, but caution is advised near the river mouth because of strong currents and potential crocodiles.
