Johnstone became the first Police Magistrate for the District of Paterson a position he held for 7 years. The house was named after Annandale in Scotland where Edward Johnstone was born in 1790. He came from the same town and was related to Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnstone of Annandale in Sydney.
"Annandale House" is a spacious but comfortably sized home on the edge of Paterson Township at the corner of King and Queen Street. The house is set among an extensive landscaped garden with lawns gently sloping down to the riverbank.
