Joint Stock Bank
As the northern limit of New South Wales Colonial settlement and the railway end of line, the village of Murrurundi boomed in the early years of the 19th century. This rail hub prosperity brought about a pressing need for more sophisticated infrastructure and buildings.
The imposing Joint Stock Bank was robustly constructed from local sandstone & hand-made bricks in 1865. The year brought fresh memories of the recently deceased Bushranger Ben Hall (1837-1865), an infamous graduate of the Murrurundi schoolhouse. This substantial building was a business bank cum managers residence, and overnight repository for valuables coming off the Murrurundi train before heading on over the Great Dividing Range, by Cobb & Co coach in the following days. The Joint Stock Bank became the Commercial Banking Company (CBC Bank) in around 1870.
Following the banks decommissioning in the early twentieth century, the building went through a storied century or mixed fortunes, from boarding house to failed shops, however the bones of the bank stood firm and continue to define the building. The Joint Stock Bank has been a private residence for near twenty years.
On entering the building from Mayne Street, you are immediately made aware that the former bank was constructed around large public rooms, a number of which still posses their pressed metal ceilings imported from England in the late 1800's. The banks vault, on the ground floor today doubles as a pantry for the French Provence style kitchen
Most of the floors maintain their original boards, much of the joinery is cedar in all its majesty.
Floors are connected internally via a large sweeping cedar staircase and outside stairwell similarly connects the floors at the rear of the premises.
The ceilings are four and a half metres high, and the window frames are over two metres tall. The walls of the house are, befitting a bank, half a metre thick hand-made brick.
There are 2 bathrooms: upstairs with bath/shower and toilet.
Downstairs with shower / toilet only.
There are 8 bedrooms in all.
A large upstairs front veranda overlooks Mayne Street and the hills to the west while the deck situated at the rear of the bank looks towards the Great Dividing Range and the garden.
The rear yard is divided into a large garden area and a decent sized horse paddock. All areas have full access to water and Murrurundi was permanently connected to the Glenbawn Dam water supply in May 2020.
Due to the thickness of the walls the house remains naturally insulated throughout summer. There are 6 fireplaces throughout, and a large wood burning fire in the main downstairs reception room. A new industrial / commercial hot water system was installed in 2011
The value of the property is that it is zoned VILLAGE allowing the handsome building to continue as a residence or develop into a commercial venture or both:

In need of rediscovery and imagination, The Joint Stock Bank building is an original charmer.
