Big drifts of the same species have been used, along with the creation of layers of planting that provide foliage interest all year.
Grasses, tough shrubs and full sun perennials predominate. Unlike most Crookwell gardens that favour spring, Spring Street was specifically designed to peak in summer and autumn, with the grasses, sedums and other perennial heads carrying right through Crookwell's cold winters.
Edna Walling also emphasised the importance of planting at all levels, both for visual impact and to encourage birdlife. Species such as agastache, salvia and daphne feed a family of Eastern Spinebills each year, and the dense planting encourages wrens to nest. Birdbaths are important and popular! Now numerous species, from parrots and magpies, several honeyeaters to wrens, silvereyes and thornbills, frequent the garden.
Outbuildings provide extensive storage and work-space. Completely screened from house and garden by a newly constructed wall are carport, woodheap and compost bins. A very large shed/ double garage houses a fully insulated storage room and roller doors access the original shed, now used as a large garden shed/workshop.
