Over many years I have often walked down the laneway to the park, the preschool and tennis courts, and would pass 2 Dirrawan Gardens in Reid. I always admired its simplicity, its modest footprint and envious position in the suburb. It is one of those homes that imprints itself on your memory. The red brick plinth contrasting with white rendered facade is distinctive and beautiful.
Contemporary heritage is a new way of viewing Reid's place in our city in 2019. Surrounded by the rejuvenation of the city centre, high-density precincts and beautiful parks, the location and the ability to live well in a protected garden precinct is the new story of Reid.

Reid is recognised by the National Heritage Register, though I feel heritage is so much more than a classification or standard. It conjures an emotional connection to history and landscape. We are drawn to a home, wanting to know who lived there, what has been their story, how has Canberra grown as a city around them.
Penny is a good example of this. She has lived a fortunate and interesting life. Dirrawan Gardens, has been her home for 44 years after living in Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America and Papua New Guinea. She and her husband raised two sons who enjoyed a happy childhood at this house as well as playing with other children in the park, they also walked to Ainslie School and Campbell High School and cycled to Daramalan and Dickson colleges.
