Last Listing description (July 2026)

Stretton at 27 Bourke Street is a rare 1920's highset bungalow well located in East Warwick on a large 923 sqm fully fenced allotment.

The home, on the corner of Cecil and Bourke Street, is in a hilltop residential precinct that largely consists of well-maintained timber cottages and gardens.

This property provides an opportunity to own a unique 100 year old architectural gem in good original condition. One, that when combined with the extensive grounds can be a wonderful home for current needs but also has so much potential to be expanded and evolved into a magnificent family house and garden.

The intact 1920's style is demonstrated internally in the stained timber detailing of the doors, windows, sills, picture rails and trim. The Living Room highlights this style with stained timber framed wall panels, cornice shelf and a decorative fireplace surround. The original open fireplace has a glazed tiled fascia and hearth.

Timber detailing is also well represented in the Kitchen with the built-in cupboards having stained/glazed timber doors. There is a decorative timber surround to the original Welcome Dover cast iron wood-burning stove. The stove sits in a fully glazed white tiled alcove. Additionally, the Kitchen has contemporary work tops crafted from locally sourced solid Australian hardwood.

There are two very generously sized Bedrooms with stained timber casement windows. Being elevated all windows in the house provide good views and take advantage of the breezes. Also capturing the breezes and the outlook, as well as being the perfect place to sit in the winter sunshine is the North/East corner Verandah.

The front entrance doorway and sidelight to the 5' wide Hallway are leadlight glazed.
All internal ceilings are 10'6 high and other than the Living Room are lined with painted timber VJ boards.

Externally the house has immense visual appeal, starting with the striking white picket fence to both street frontages.

The double gable Bourke Street elevation has a broad, relaxed front stairway. The rear stair leading up to the back landing is roofed and lattice enclosed. The landing has an ingenious vertical timber blade louvre screen, adjustable for breeze and view. A poly-tank rainwater tank sits atop a high tank stand adjacent to the landing.

The house is clad in timber chamfer board which has been over-clad with colour-fast vinyl chamfer board cladding which is virtually indistinguishable in appearance from the original.

Underneath the house is fully secured with hardwood battens. This storage area and original Laundry and downstairs WC (currently disconnected) is un-renovated other than for a later enclosed and paved laundry area.

A single skin, stud framed chamfer board original garage sits in the South/West corner of the block with drive-through access to Cecil Street and there is an original timber garden shed in the North/West corner of the site.
There is also a relatively recent lockable Colourbond double garage with access off Bourke Street.

Stretton is more than just a homeit's a rare opportunity to secure a beautifully preserved piece of Warwick's architectural heritage. With its elevated position, expansive grounds, and enduring character, this property invites you to enjoy its charm today while imagining the possibilities of tomorrow. Whether you embrace its classic appeal or choose to enhance and expand, Stretton offers the perfect foundation for a truly special family residence.
